Smt Juhi Chawla launching the new portal to address complaints of radiation hazard from Cell towers.
To address the public concerns on related to Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) radiations, a helpline is being launched/opened in Mumbai on 4th Oct 2012 for registering of complaints followed by measurements for EMF radiations of the BTS site / location referred by the complainant. Similar initiatives shall be taken up in Delhi soon. If the model is successful, the same shall be deployed across the country.
HELP LINE Number for Mumbai is 99695 55000. Complaints can be lodged through a computerized complaint handling system available on the home page of DoT web site (http://www.dot.gov.in) as a link: Public Grievance – EMF Radiation . The processing Fee for each complaint shall be Rs. 4,000/-.
EMF exposure limit (Base Station Emissions) has been lowered to 1/10th of the ICNIRP exposure limit and SAR values of mobile handsets revised to 1.6 W/kg averaged over 1 gram of human tissue w.e.f. 1st Sept. 2012. India has now one of the most stringent EMF exposure norms in the world.
Telecom Enforcement Resource & Monitoring (TERM) Cells of DOT have been entrusted with the job of conducting audit on the self certification furnished by the Service Providers. TERM Cell carries out Test Audit covering up to 10% of the BTS sites on random basis.
For non-compliance of EMF radiation standards, a penalty of Rs. 5 lakh is liable to be levied per BTS for each Service Provider.
